Katie Hill faced a tough and crowded jungle primary. After clearing the field, she faced incumbent Steve Knight, who was a moderate Republican with views in line with the district.

To win, we knew Katie had to first coalesce the fractured Democratic electorate after a tough primary and increase our support with Latino voters. At the same time, we needed to win a supermajority of independent (DTS) voters – knowing these were the most likely voters to defect to Knight. We utilized a combination of creative approaches and messaging across the program that we kept fully in sync with other campaign communication.

The mail program helped the campaign outperform polling. What was expected to be a close race ended up being nearly a nine-point victory for Katie Hill, outperforming the 2016 congressional candidate by 15 points, Hillary (’16) by two points and the 2018 gubernatorial candidate by seven points.
